A New Floating Cinema Experience is Coming to London This Summer

Cinema doors might be open again, but for many being shut in a dark room for a few hours with a bunch of other people is still too soon after the peak of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Thankfully lockdown has led to a number of innovative ways for movie buffs to enjoy the cinema experience outdoors including the resurgence of drive-ins and even a cycle-in cinema.

Adding to the alfresco cinema experience in London is Openaire Float-In Cinema, a collaboration between Openaire, Merchant Square, GoBoat and luxury ice cream brand Häagen-Dazs.

The fleet of 16 boats will set sail on September 2nd on Regent’s Canal and marks the UK’s first cinematic experience by boat. It follows the pioneering global first ‘cinema on water’ concept by Häagen-Dazs in partnership with the City of Paris and MK2 earlier this summer, which received widespread global acclaim.

The boats will provide socially-distanced seating for up to 128 guests — 8 landlubbers on each.

Visitors can expect to enjoy family favourites such as Toy Story and The Lion King, as well as sing-a-long screenings of Grease, Rocketman, The Greatest Showman and A Star is Born.

Films will be shown on a 6x3m LED screen, with audio coming via wireless, sanitised headphones.

Prices range from £200 to £250 per boat depending on the number of people aboard. This means that the experience is teetering on affordable if you take your whole household or crew but pricy if you’re self-isolating.

For anyone who doesn’t fancy taking to the water, there will be plenty of socially distanced deckchair seating available on dry land. Those tickets come in at £15 each.

As with many of this strange summer’s venues, snacking is entirely app-based: you order on your phone and popcorn, ice-cream, drinks and other tasty treats are delivered to your boat or deckchair.

The Float-in will run for 4 weeks until Sunday 27th September.
